I have a tendency to just list products on my site, without doing the meta tags for each product immediately.
My question is, since I ping the search engines daily yet I only sit and write all the meta tags once a week, will Google et al. update the product meta tags?
I mean when I ping Google, the meta tags will be blank. Then after a week or so I'll have inserted the tags, but I'm just wondering if Google will recognise the new tags at any point or if the products I'm listing lately will stay indexed with no meta tags?
I don't know anyone who has managed to "control" Google... If you ever manage it, then keep your discovery and technique secret, sell the service on the open market and you'll be a multi multi multi multi multi multi millionaire.
Just an FYI that Meta Tag changes w/o content changes are not a reason to "ping" Google. Additionally, daily pinging is very ill advised as you can be penalized.
Thanks for the info, good to know. I only ping google when I actually add new products. Just wasn't sure if Google would pick up on any 'empty' meta tags that had since been 'filled' when they crawl the site?
Google crawls full text. So if by Meta Tags you mean keywords, then you can expect little if any interest in this tag from Google.
Meta description is fully crawled, but not for rank. Its relevancy is measured by query. So your description is only used in the search results if its relevant to the query.
The <title></title> is the most important on page factor.. but is not a Meta Tag. It is however, crawled for rank with the remaining text.
