Listing subcategories in product listing

I had a client ask me a question, and I've been searching for a week, but cannot find the answer. So hopefully someone can give me a nudge here :)

The client has a couple of categories that have subcategories. (most of them don't, but there's two categories that have a few subs). On the product listing pages for these categories, she wants the category image with the name of the category to show (no problem, already done), but she also wants a list of the child categories to display beneath this image.

Now, I know I can pull that off with a sidebox and do it in te sidebar - but she wants it on the category listing pages, right in the main column. Would anyone know of a contribution that can do this, or amybe the right search term (because what I'm putting in is coming up with nothing) or some kind of hint as to how I can do this?

I've already told her that most likely it can't be done (well yeah, I'm sure it can, but not within her budget anyway) but I thought I'd ask to see if anyone knows a "quick" way - since I'm coming up empty. I know I can do this, but if I can't find a quick answer, then she's going to pass on it. But I gotta try - so any nudges for me?

Categories have categories or products in them ... never both ...

How would you list "child categories" on the product_listing if you are looking at the Products when Categories never have both Categories and Products in them at the same time ...

I mean the *category* listing page, not product listing. I'd show you a URL, except that I can't on a public forum... I know.

On the ZenCart site I have set up for her, when you click on a category (for purposes of example, we'll call the main category "Pets"), the page lists like so:

Pets
 [pic of dog]   [pic of cat]   [pic of fish]   [pic of bird]
    Dogs             Cats             Fish             Birds

The categories, of course link their their respective category pages, which would have a listing of the child categories. So say you clicked on "Dogs" - it would take you to the "Dogs" category page which look like so:

Pets>Dogs
 [dog pic]       [dog pic]      [dog pic]
 Small Dogs     Medium Dogs     Large Dogs

..and so on.

But what she wants is for the "Pets" category to list like this:

Pets
 [pic of dog]      [pic of cat]      [pic of fish]      [pic of bird]
    Dogs              Cats              Fish              Birds
  Small Dogs                         Tropical Fish
 Medium Dogs                         Betta Fish
Large Dogs

Does that make more sense?

Thanks Ajeh - I did that already actually, and couldn't find anything. I've been having massive brainfarts this week, and I think maybe that's contributing to my issues - I'll try again :)

another quick search and I didn't find anything, but I did refer her to a coder I know (and have used before - he's actually from these forums :) ) who can probably pull this off in his sleep :)
