Default Attribute Selection and Add to Cart

I've been searching the forum for a while, and I've found information about doing the opposite of what I want to do, and information making me think it will be difficult to do what I want to do, but here it goes. . .

I have products with attributes. Instead of having a "more info" link to the product page, I would like to have an "add to cart" button that will add the product to the page with a default attribute. I will put in the description that they can visit the product page to change the default attribute, this way someone can purchase something without having to go to the product page, but if they want a different configuration they can go there. Is this possible?

If this isn't possible is it possible to have attribute selection on the product listing pages, instead of having to go to the product page itself?
