How do I show only Featured Products on home page?

How can I display only the Featured Products box on the index page without showing a category or categories.

I am running v1.3.8a

admin -> configuration -> index listing ->

Show New Products on Main Page set to 0
Show Featured Products on Main Page set to 1
Show Special Products on Main Page set to 0
Show Upcoming Products on Main Page set to 0

I have it set that way but I still have to show a category or categories in the middle section or it shows nothing at all.

Configuration > Layout Settings
Categories - Always Show on Main Page 1
Main Page - Opens with Category 21

If I set Categories - Always Show on Main Page 0 then the Featured Products do not show at all.
