Font & Column adjustments.....Help

Hi all,
firstly, can I please request that any responses to these questions are written as if for a 10 year old to understand.... cause thats how I feel at the moment.

Anyway.... I would like to make 2 adjustments to my standard layout, yet can not find the correct area in the admin section.

1. I use a single column template and I would like to increase the width of my column (Left) by about 20% .... How do I do this?

2. I would then like to increase the Font size in my categories & EZ pages menu's..... How do I do this?

Any assistance would be appreciated.

PS. If it involves going into my public_html folder, can you please be very specific about where I need to go and what I need to change... I get very scared going in there !!!
