Try setting your client to use "passive FTP"
And don't use any FTP program or add on that stores passwords unencrypted.

I just checked my settings with filezilla and ran the configuration wizard with the following setting:
default transfer mode:
passive mode
allow fallback to other tranfer mode on failure
Configure passive mode:
use the server's external IP address instead
In order to use active mode, filezilla needs to know your external ip address:
ask your operating system for the external ip address
Get external ip address from: http://ip.filezilla-project.org/ip.php
Don't use external IP address on local connections
Configure port range:
ask operating system for a port
Result of Test:
mismatch of external ip address and my ip address
anyone have any idea if these setting are wrong. by the way I have a router.
sorry i know this not really a zencart issue, but i would really like to try to fix this so I can transfer my zencart files for editing.

my host just emailed me...he believes it's the version of filezilla i'm using. going to see if changing it will work
