Root directory?

I installed my cart on the root directory, but was told that makes it more vulnerable to hackers. The suggestion was to install in another folder and then have a forward page. However, isn't that a no-no as far as SEO?

I also see that a lot of files are supposed to be left 777, but isn't that a bit dangerous?

I've searched other threads, but couldn't really find anything that answered this.

Most Zencart installations are installed to the root directory without problems.
