Default Looking for clarification on Zencart Installation in the book

    Hi,

Had Zen up and running on my old pc but didn't do anthing with it becasue I was waiting for version 2 to come out - hint hint

I now have a new pc and am trying to reinstall but it not working and I remember that I had to do some sort of trick to get it up and running but can't remember what it was now.

    So here's the deal -

I'm following the instructions as per the book - got xampp etc.

put it into c:/server/xampp/ as instructed

then as per book it says go to xampp via start....< I don't see this anywhere

so I go to file and dblclk xampp controler it opens

Apache, msql not running - click start - says they started and nothing happens

Ports in wnidows enabled - using AVG can't figure out where ports are on it to double check it.

I used the start apache icon(dos) said I had error line 57 - think it had something to do with server name "xampp/apache" or something like that - me at work right now. I tried to change the path and now it says error line 3 line 3 is # sign

What am I doing wrong? Thanks.

Also, I think I would prefer to set up zen on a MAc but from what I've seen it's just for development on a mac and if you were going to do uploads to your site from you local then it would be best done from a PC is this correct? Thanks.

Could you let us know which version of Windows and XAMPP you are using?

Do check that your anti-virus did not automatically and silently clean the XAMPP executable you downloaded because that was what caused problems for you the last time round.

If your XAMPP is installed properly, you should be able to see a welcome page at http://localhost - assuming you have not changed the ports.

If that works, it means some part of your configuration maybe giving a problem. You might want to retrace your steps according to the instructions in the book to make sure everything is in order.

Sure as soon as I get home.

I think AVG didn't do anything this time around.

Last time it went balistic over it and couldn't install period (until I allowed it). My new machine is a complete rebuild and upgrade - basically I bought a brand new machine. started with blank everything, new hard drives, etc.

I have XP home edition and (since I'm at work) I'm using the source forge one in the book - 1.1.4.16 (verify when home) or close to it.

Using the file above - and this may have something to do with it:

When I click it a window opens and says "extract to ..." no mention of the word "installation" - this might have some reason why it's not seen via the start button.

    I extract into C:/server(made this folder)xampp

You know I'm a complete noob job at some things - for example I can study modify, html, javascript, css, etc. and at other times can completely screw up a simple process like this.

Are macs just for develoment or can we use them for live? Meaning - I load the PC version to my site - can I load the files I do in development on my mac to my site via th ftp or should I stay on the same platforms?

Which version do you want me to Zen - the 1.3.7 or 1.3.8?

I'm really wanting to get this up and running now as I had a great deal of family issues which kept me from finishing this last year.

As always, I appreciate the help.

    xampp-win32-1.4.16

Ok - I'm not sure what to do here. I copied over the original one that I had on my old drive(the entire folder) - draged it out of a box and it seems to be working fine. Welcome to XAMPP for Windows Version 1.4.16

To help out others, should I try to do a file comparison to see what's different?

Now, I guess it's a matter of rebuilding the store or would you still suggest I start a fresh?

Any programs to use to compare?

Thank you very much for providing a very detailed walk thru of what you did. It certainly makes things clearer

I may be wrong but I think what you did was used the zip version of XAMPP on the new PC and an installer version of XAMPP on your old PC which explains the different "install" vs "extract" options. You can refer to the XAMPP site for information on the differences between the 2 installation options.

I wouldn't suggest posting a file comparison. This is because your setup now consists of a "mix" of an installer and zip versions of XAMPP which may cause problems down the road, especially when the installation paths are different on the 2 computers. It might confuse new readers who are unlikely to have such a setup. Nevertheless, if you want to do a file comparison, you can try Winmerge which is suggested in the book.

Ok, since this is a Zen Cart forum and not an XAMPP forum, here are some quick answers to your other questions:

    • Mac OS, just like Linux and Windows, can be used as development environments.
    • Use Zen Cart version 1.3.8a with all the latest security and bug patches to run your store; unless you have a specific mod that won't run with version 1.3.8a, which is highly unlikely since your store is quite new.

OMG I can't believe just how stupid I have been!!!!

The Zip vs the EXE was the answer!! thanks so much for pointing it out

If anyone else gets the same problem check that you have the exe and not the zip!

However, now that I see how stupid I just was, I am prettry happy that I got everything working from the zip - don't ask me how I did it - I just did it.

I've deleted the old files and reinstalled from the exe file.

You'll also know that you're doing it right because it almost loads instantly from the zip (which is the wrong way) and it will take a couple of minutes to install (which is the right way).

Thanks again for all of the help!!
