Date of Birth on Registration Form

I ran a search for "age" on the forum and didn't come back with anything.

Is there any good reason that the date of birth should be on the registration form? I don't think I have ever been required to put my DOB when purchasing something online (of course, it might be useful if selling "adult" items). I am not selling "adult items" so can I remove this requirement?

If you don't need that field just turn it off from the admin-->configuration-->customer details
