Default Changing stock levels when attribute ordered

As a newcomer please forgive my lack of knowledge! I looked at the thread "how to change order quantity of attribute ?" and I guess this is related.

Have set up products eg Timberland/Girls/Age2-10.
so eg, We sell a pink T-shirt in Age2-10 sub category BUT within that, when ordering, the user can choose exactly what age via a drop down attribute box. So far so good.

Now, my question is...How do stock levels get changed for the chosen age only? The T-shirts stock levels are listed within the Age2-10 sub category as a whole - is there any way around this other than setting up all the ages as individual sub-categories, as this would be a nightmare given that there are around 25 Main categories all split into Boys or Girls and differing age ranges.

    thanks

You will need the stock by attributes 3rd party add on by kurio available in the downloads section and then have to enter the stock level for each type

Finally getting around to adding the 'Stock by Attributes' add-on by kurio. Before I try doing this......it seems to have been around a few years now so is it a tried and trusted add-on or is it likely to cause other problems??? Does it need to be tested on a 'test site' before installing or should it work ok?
Is there any documentation about how to use it?
The cart in progress of being built is pretty standard apart from the look and feel of the pages - little code has been changed.
    thanks

Save a full set of your files and your Database before installing - this provides you a fallback position if needed

Seems to have installed ok and can now add stock attributes.
It has thrown one further question however.
The (sub) Category shows eg 6 items in stock AS A WHOLE, with the individual ones set for eg
    Age 2 = 2 items
    Age 4 = 3 items
    Age 5 = 0 items
    Age 7 = 1 Item

    Fine so far.....

However - if the customer selects Age 5 they wont know it is out of stock until they see it in the basket with *** agaianst it and a comment it will be placed on backorder....they the have to remove or pay for it.

Is there any way an 'out of stock' message can be determined/displayed BEFORE it reaches the basket?
    thanks

No responses to the previous question so maybe it's not easy!

I have a more pressing problem. Installed the Stock by Attributes module and when a purchase takes place the overall stock quantity is reduced BUT the stock qty against the individual attribute value does not get reduced.
    eg
    Total stock = 9
    Age 6 stock = 6
    Age 8 stock = 3

    Purchase 1 age 6
    Total stock now shows 8
    but Age 6 & 8 unchanged.

    Any thoughts?

I have tried looking everywhere to find an answer to these questions - has no one else come across these - especially about subtracting from the indivual attribute sock level.
    thanks

This issue has been comprehensively covered in the stock by attributes support threads (there are two due to me making the mistake of answering questions in two places a couple of years ago!) It sounds likely that you have installed the very latest release which is not by me, and is incomplete. More information can be found towards the end of this thread.

Originally I had a reply from kobra to install the 'Stock by Attribute' and I cut and pasted the link from the add-ons:
    http://www.zen-cart.com/index.php?ma...roducts_id=310

Is this the correct one? If not what should it be? WIll it address the issue of subtracting sold stock from the attribute variable stock level?

thanks...I'll not the other thread then for future use!
