I am new to the forum, so please give me a little leeway if I am asking a dumb question. We are in the middle of migrating our site from one host to another and I do not want to kill the current site until we are ready to cut over to the new one.
The new host assigned us a temporary URL to use until we update our name servers to point to the new site. We started to work on the site today and installed Zen Cart from the Fantastico Deluxe interface and were forced to select the domain name we have not yet assigned to the site by the application. Of course, this made a mess of the navigation.
I talked with the hosting company and they suggested that we not set up the cart like this and instead wait until we swing over to the correct domain. Well, this sounds great, but we have an enormous product line and it is in a custom made store that we cannot migrate easily. In fact, we want to redesign all of the product info in Zen Cart, adding a lot more detail. It would be a disaster for us to take down the live site and then have no store available for the weeks it would take to populate Zen Cart that way.
Does anyone have any advice about how to go about this problem? I can handle doing an install of Zen Cart myself outside of Fantastico if that is the way to go. I suppose I could point it at the temp domain that way, but will I get myself into a huge mess when I need to correct the system to point to the permanent domain. Doh! This is so complicated... I hope you guys can assist. Thanks!
