ok I am sorry to be such a pain but
    I have DL Crimson Editor-
I was hoping that going to www.example would help me find the file on page 37 - but if I have to adjust the file before I can get to example then I am still stuck -
I have gone into windows then to system 32folder then to the drivers after that there is no trace. the next files should be etc and then to hosts but it is not there. Am I on the right track or is ther an easier way?

I can't image anyone doing this WO the manual.

You are over-thinking this. There is absolutely no need to try and configure your PC so that when you go to http://www.example.com you see your offline Zen Cart website on your local web server.

All you need do is to go to http://localhost/folder_name (folder_name being the name of the folder you installed Zen Cart in inside the htdocs folder).

Why are you trying to set up a domain name? This is all you need to do:

    1. Install XAMPP on your PC.

    2. Download and unzip the latest version of Zen Cart.

    3. Create a new folder inside the XAMPP 'htdocs' folder.

    4. Copy/Paste the Zen Cart folders and files into the new folder inside the htdocs folder.

    5. Go to XAMPP at http://localhost and set up a User Name and Password for MySQL.

    6. Go to http://localhost/phpmyadmin and create a blank database.

    7. Then go to http://localhost/folder_name/zc_install and begin the Zen Cart installation. You'll need the name of the database, the db server address (localhost), and the MySQL User Name and Password you set up.

    8. After the install is completed you delete the zc_install folder and set the includes/configure.php file to Read Only by right-clicking on it and selecting Properties and ticking the Read Only box.

    9. Now go to http://localhost/folder_name and your Zen Cart website should be there.

I guess that is the difference between being totally Zenned and not Zenned at all/ I am cookbooking it from the manual becasue I have absolutely no idea what I am doing! And that is what it says to do! I am to set up a domain name - configure Apache-configure mercury and then prep to download the zencart.

it says to edit the file
    c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\host
after that I should be able to use local host - but I really have not figured all that out either.
I guess i am at fiugring out how to get the explorer to work offline in this system.

I am afraid to skip a step for fear that things will no configure correctly and that I will have more trouble in the long run.

    TIA

When you install XAMPP it is added to the hosts file.

I have never used the manual you refer to, so have no idea what it says. However it does seem to be unnecessarily complicating what should be a fairly straight forward procedure.

If you want to follow the manual then that's fine, but I can't help you with that.

My best advice is to follow the 9 step plain I laid out in my last post.

I have installed XAMPP and other kinds of offline web servers countless times, and installed countless numbers of PHP based programmes on both Intranet and Internet web servers.

    Hi stitchnkitty,

The use of the domain name "www.example.com" is to simulate a real-world scenario when you eventually host your site on a remote host and to explain some basic internet knowledge.

If you have problems setting up the domain, you can save time by following Vger's suggestions to just use "localhost" instead of "www.example.com". That way, you do not have to edit the Windows hosts file anymore.

Thanks to Vger's instructions in the earlier post, you should be able to get going with the use of "localhost". If in doubt, just refer to the book's screenshots. Btw, you can also skip the Mercury/Thunderbird configuration to further reduce the time you need in setting things up while speeding up your time in learning Zen Cart.

Hi all I am still cooking booking it and julia childs I am defiantely not!

I have learned that the advise of those who post is not to be taken lightly sooo that said
    I have done Steps 1;2;3;4;and 6
5 was a bit beyond because I could not find where to proceed with that so I was afraid to go to 7 or 8 or 9 without 5 -

So far nothing is coming together to give me any understanding of this. TIA for all the patience.
