ok so did you get the 1.4.16 version? the EXE version and not the ZIP one? I made that mistake

if you have done everything right - make sure ports are configured, etc then all you have to do is click it and everything should be fine.

note - after the install - the filezilla you see there is server - you have to go online to get the client so you can upload fast ftp

then once done - download mozzila thunderbird - another nice program

download 1.3.8a full file set - you'll be very happy when you get to page 53

as for the getting to the links for 1.4.16 I think they currently have a bug - I could get there either if you need the file I might have it

    ah here you go:

yes the links are still not working - i am on DU so last I looked this is a 3 hr DL.
What is the Thunderbird useful for?
I have Microsoft FW at this time altho some had said this is no good and get FREEZoneALARM- which it to is a 2-3 hour DL

SO on the MS FW there is a thing for TCP and it is a default - i left that checked as opposed to UDP(whatever that means)
So while waiting on the DL I went ahead and added the ports to the FW.

Does everyone out there have the Zone alarm as opposed to MS?
    TIA

Even if you are on dial-up it's worth the time it takes to download and install XAMPP. The latest is: xampp-win32-1.7.1-installer.exe - and this is the one you want.

Forget the comment about Thunderbird (it's a rather crappy and amateurish mail programme). You're much better off with Outlook Express or Outlook - one of which you probably already have installed.

Forget about activating FileZilla as part of the XAMPP install, it's not necessary if you already have an FTP programme.

Forget about enabling Mercury Mail as part of the XAMPP install. It's not needed and requires a lot of extra manual installation and setup.

Juts download XAMPP, as above, and run the install.

I was just replying to the book comment as I also used the book -there was also an issue the the source forge link last night the other versions wouldn't appear so I posted direct link for the dude.

Brings up another question though - is the new one better to run 1.3.8a off of or are we (who are using the book) still good with 1.4.16?

a couple of Q? I have sounds turned on the computer when I bring up the xampp control panel the close program chimed continually and did not stop- I turned the sound off - but it makes me wonder if my computer is trying to close something continually in the background.

Also - I have gotten to the part where i am setting ua a local domain and at the bottom of 36 it says to type in http://www.example.com and an example page is to pop up - mine is 'page not found'.

    TIA alot!!

Were you able to get to the link for the 1.4.16?

Because the only way I found it was to source and some may find that hard.

I've not heard of problems with the sounds continually chiming before. U might want to check whether it's some other program doing that or your firewall/anti-virus that is alerting you to something.

If you have problems using "www.example.com":

    • check your settings starting from pg 37 onwards.
    • make sure you have started your Apache and MySQL in your XAMPP control panel. Do NOT start the FileZilla svc.
    • restarting your Windows may sometimes help as well.

ok I am sorry to be such a pain but
    I have DL Crimson Editor-
I was hoping that going to www.example would help me find the file on page 37 - but if I have to adjust the file before I can get to example then I am still stuck -
I have gone into windows then to system 32folder then to the drivers after that there is no trace. the next files should be etc and then to hosts but it is not there. Am I on the right track or is ther an easier way?

I can't image anyone doing this WO the manual.
