Trying to create a custom template

all i did was copy the default but my page looks like this

when i choose the default template it looks fine. What am i doing wrong?

thank you. i did follow those instructions exactly two separate times. however, when i choose my new custom template, shouldn't it look like the default template, and i can make changes from there?

right now when i choose the custom template it looks like a pink, orange, yellow, and brown 1998 mess.

When you state "default" ARE YOU REFERRING TO THE "Contempoary Green Classic" template?

Then what you should have started with is a copy of those template files. You appear to have copied the files in template_default.
