Not being familiar with how the WYSIWYG editor works, the best workaround may be to go to plain text mode (Configuration > My Store > HTML Editor) and enter the link code directly.

I could go that route, but it would defeat the simplicity/purpose of having the WYSIWYG editor. Thanks for the suggestion though!

I believe the WYSIWYG editor should make correct links, so the question is what is different about your installation that it is not working for you?
