    Default Uploading Admin Changes?

    Hi,

In order to get to grips with ZenCart Admin, Overrides etc, I have set it all up on my laptop. It was always my intention to just have a play and then do it all again on the internet site, but so much is starting to look right and with the time it has taken I am wondering if it would be posible to simply upload everthing to my internet site from the laptop AND get it to work.

I think I would be ok with the overides, but it will be the MySQL stuff, the image links, the name of the database and such that will be the problem.

Is there any advice anywhere on how to do this please.

    Ta.

If it works in your laptop, then it will work on your server. All you will need to do is to change the configure files to recognise the new file locations and database access requirements.

This FAQ for changing servers gives a step-by-step guide that is equally relevant to your situation.

I've have had a read and it makes it all seems far too easy, but I suspect that for the geeks (meant respectfully!) it is. For me I'm not so sure.

For example will the links to my images still work and if not where within the database are they stored. Things like that.

Or have I just demonstrated a massive lack of understanding that means no one will ever reply to my posts again

    Cheers.

The links to your images are stored in a "relative" format. So it doesn't matter where your site is, they images are always in the same place relative to the top of the site, and that's defined only in two places, those configure files that you've been reading about, so those are the only places where the top needs to be redefined.

It really is that easy. For those of us who install and move Zen Cart's on a daily basis, it's almost trivial. Try it ... I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. And even if it goes a bit wrong, there's plenty of help here to help you sort it out.

Ok, many thanks again for your help.
I will do as you suggest.

I have a a quick look at the relative versions of the software that my host uses and what I have on my laptop. Do you forsee any issues? I'm not writing leading edge stuff so I suspect not.

    MyHost
    php 5.2.9
    MySql 5.0.81 Community
    Apache 2.2.11 (Unix)
    ZenCart 1.3.8

    WAMP2.0h (on my laptop)
    php 5.2.9-2
    MySql 5.1.33
Apache 2.2.11 (Running on Windows XP)
    ZenCart 1.3.8

    Thanks again.

Since those are all fairly up-to-date versions, no issues expected.

I hope I'm ok keeping this thread going rather than opening a new one!

Ok, I'm going to give it a go. I have full FTP access to my site and will do a copy to my local PC first. I will also get my host to do a full backup. Bear in mind that my site is not live, so I am ok with a degree of testing but I want to try and get as much right as I can before hand. I know that some issues will remain but want to keep them to a minimum.

A couple(!!) of questions if I may:-

    1. For my backup should I copy everything, the whole site, even the top level folder above 'www' in the directory listing, or just www and the folders it contains? Sorry I don't know whether to call that top level folder 'root' or not. That top level folder contains folders like 'cpanel', 'fantasticodata', 'htpasswds' and so on.

    2. Will that be a full backup of everything. ie if this goes badly wrong then will I be able to log back in and FTP it all up again from my local backup?

    3. Are there issues I need to be aware of due to the fact that it is running on XP on my laptop and on Linux at my host?

    4. Are there files on my laptop that I should NOT copy up to my host?

    5. What effect will this have on passwords?

    Thanks for any help.
