    Default Getting an SSL Cert.

Ok contacted my host about getting an SSL but don't understand what they are tell me:

Hi, we do not re-sell SSL certificates. You can purchase that through any online provider or use xxx, there are many providers of SSL certificates, you can google them.

Also to use an SSL certificate on shared hosting, you will require a static IP which is $30.00/yr. Once you've decided, contact our billing department by ticket and they will issue this to you.

Don't I have to be on a dedicated server?

If I did get the SSL - ant the Static IP - doesn't it still show shared and get confused?

Just wondering becuase of what I read on page 368 of the book.

I'm not an expert, but here's my scoop - you get a dedicated ip with your hosting account provider, then you purchase a SSL certificate from a 3rd party (godaddy, geotrust, etc).

You don't normally have to be on a dedicated server to have a dedicated IP address (2 totally different things).

Here's where it may get tricky - when you purchase a SSL from a 3rd party, it has to be installed into your hosting account. Your hosting company may do this, or they may leave it up to you. Some companies like godaddy and bluehost will do it all for you (they have SLLs, the install them for free, etc). If you keep running into headaches, it may be worth moving to a new host.
