I would like to create a category of products that is available only to a set of customers that have been given permission to access the category.

I envision customers being members of a "customer group", and product categories having a permission option for these groups. This association would be done by the store administrator only - not something the customer could select. Without the appropriate permission, the product category would be invisible to the user.

I've looked here and Google and have come-up short.

Any ideas?
