Default Slow site - High parse time

I've thought my site is not as snappy as it should be and turned on parse & query settings.

I have a store with 8 categories. When I look at a category with 27 products in it I get the following.

    Parse Time: 14.293 - Number of Queries: 1090 - Query Time: 12.863866250931

1090 queies to display 27 products ?(!!) 14 seconds to load a page??

Do inactive categories, products and specials count?

I asked my ISP about db performance The tech randomly clicked links and got 0 query times. He didn't click the same link described above AFAIK and I've asked for access to the slow logs myself

But on NONE of the pages do I get 0 query time per the numbers at the bottom of my pages. So I wonder what's going on and why slow logs show fine performance, but the parse/query time of ZC shows pretty poor performance IMO.

I have reviews, right EZ-pages, specials (none now active) bestsellers boxes) activated. I think that's pretty minimal.

    Thanks for clarifying

    Quick interpretation:
14 seconds to load and display the whole page
    1090 queries executed
12.8 seconds to do those queries
    -----
1.4 seconds to parse the page content without waiting for the database

The bottleneck in this case is the time it takes to do the queries.

OK, any suggestions for reducing the number of queries / bringing the parse time down?

    Thanks,

A link for the site would of been helpful.
There is a lot that can be done to reduce the loading time. Such as: validate the site, minimize the http links, reduce the CSS and Scripts running on home page, and finally compress scripts and CSS files. I would fix the problems in the order listed.
