Default Best practices using 2 folders (http/https)?

I have a hosting package that uses a httpdocs folder for unsecure http content and a httpsdocs folder for secure https content.
Are there any best practices for installing and maintaining websites that uses this?

Which folder would I choose for installing?
What exactly would I be needing to put in the unsecure folder and what in the secure folder?
Would I be needing to change files in both folder when modifying a template?
Or add products and their associated images?

Also... do you have any suggestions in corresponding to my hosting provider to let me use one folder instead of two?

Well, if you have no choice but to use 2 folders, you're going to have to keep 2 identical sets of all files in each folder, thus doubling up your storage requirements and your administrative work. (only exception is for 2 files: your configure.php files need to be slightly different due to the different folder names)

Or, you might be able to convince your host to set up a symlink to allow all your https content to be served from the same folder as your http content.

I was afraid of that I would need to keep copies of everything.

Does it matter whether to install in the http or https folder, since I need to modify the configure.php anyway?

I will try hard to convince them to set up a symbolic link or something else that will solve it.

Getting off-topic.... any suggestions for affordable web hosting that works well with zen cart?

Get them to SymLink the httpdocs and httpsdocs folder as DrByte suggested. They could easily do it for the whole server and then no one would have to keep two sets of folders.

For web hosting that works for Zen Cart owners look in the Certified Hosts page, and remember the old adage "You only get what you pay for".
