No problems will be created by the posted fix. In fact, the posted fix is now part of the next version. So, if you're using virgin code then the fix will only do good.
I have no idea why your specific situation wasn't manifesting the problem initially, and will never know without looking at all the files on your site to investigate exactly. Maybe you've got an addon or template installed that's changed something of how the normal code works and thus the problem is not manifesting the same.
