    Default MYSQL vs MYSQLi

Just installed WAMP on my dev machine(xp). phpmyadmin gets grumpy if you disable the php mysqli extension and prompts you to re enable it.
My domain server says nothing about mysqli and seems to only to use the php mysql extension.
This brings me to a few questions to which I can't find any adequate answers:

1: Does Zen Cart support PHP's mysqli extensions?

2: If I used mysqli on my test site, will It work with the mysql on the server for the live store?

3: Can I use the latest WAMP without the PHP msqli Extension enabled?

4: Am I barking up the wrong tree?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Zen Cart doesn't specifically use the mysqli extensions.
