Default xampp test site on windows xp

I recently rebuilt an upgrade site on my pc, windows xp and xampp.

About once every week the site access 'vanishes'. The first time it took a very long effort to figure it out....

Part of setting up the test site was making www.example.com on my localhost, following the zen manual. On page 37 it gives a snippet to cut and paste into \WINDOWS\system32\dr ivers\etc\hosts.

It seems that every time windows Update runs, it erases the changes, even though I set the file to read only.

Now I just keep /hosts loaded on my NotepadII, and the code snipped on my desktop - and when the site access vanishes I copy and paste and save, and away we go.

Still can't figure out why 'read only' doesn't stop Update (or me).

What does this have to do with Zencart? Maybe you should access your site via http://localhost/ and forget about this problem. Otherwise ask the Microsoft Windows XP support why they change the files when you run a windows update.

If you have your local setup installed on your hard drive under
Program Files, your changes are most likely being saved as temp files under User.

See the "e-Start Your Web Store with Zen Cart" author's errata pg here, Pg. 34, Step 2:
