Why don't my images display?

I'm a newbie to carts, live in Italy: this was my install sequence.

1.) Installed [xampp-win32-1.4.16-installer.exe]
2.) Prepared in mysql the title for my database.
3.) Allowed Curl
4.) Installed in local [zen-cart_138-B_ITA.zip]
No demo, languages it + en
5.) Deleted [ZC_install]
6.) Changed the [admin] name, given permissions
7.) Installed French language patch
8.) Installed security patches
9.) Installed override folders wherever I found [classic]
10.) All was working fine, email included.

I played moderately with the system, without going too far.
Big deals like replacing the background color with an image.

I always made sure that before trying a change in whichever [what_have_you.php] file, I would first save next a copy of the same as [what_have_you_ORIGINAL.php] file, just in case.

All was fine till a moment in which all images disappeared an for no obvious reason: I mean all images, from the header to the three language flags, down to the buttons needed in admin to get modifications implemented

Not finding a way out I erased the program from ground zero, database included and reinstalled.
Reached end installation, still NO images.
Done it three times…

Next I thought to reinstall the entire program on another PC.
I downloaded the install programs fresh from the sites, XAMPP and ZEN-CARTY ITA and, to make double sure, I installed two carts, one standard and one demo, each with a different identity, but to no avail.
I get text but No images.

It is probable I’ve done something stupid, but what?
Any help will be welcomed!
