Odd boxes showing on my mainpage

I have two boxes showing on the right column that I can not get rid of because they are not in my layout boxes controller.
One box is called "have you seen..." and the other one is acalled "sponsors"
How do I remove them?

I am using 1.38 patched on a linux server running PHP 5 and MySQL 5

I am using the default "classic" template. Which I have not done anything to yet.

I can not remove the "tell a friend" even though I have it turned off in my admin/configuration/email section and also in the layout boxes controller.

Dang man, I tell ya I have QWERTY permanently embedded on my forehead!

well I found the answer to this question... I thought I would peruse the FAQ's while waiting for an answer and LOW AND BEHOLD the answer was there. Glory hallelujah! It's a miracle I tell ya!

Those are banner adverts. You have 2 ways of removing them:
a) You could use the Admin->Tools->Banner Manager to edit/disable/delete them.
b) You could turn off the banners sideboxes using the Layout Boxes Controller.

I can not remove the "tell a friend" even though I have it turned off in my admin/configuration/email section and also in the layout boxes controller.

That's controlled at the per-product-type level:
Admin->Catalog/Products->Product Types->General->Edit Layout ... turn off Tell A Friend
