I tried to update my homepage title through the language file in metatags.php, howver, the other pages get updated but not the homepage, i am not sure where the problem might be.

Are you sure you read everything well?
in meta_tags.php:
// NOTE: If HOME_PAGE_TITLE is left blank (default) then TITLE and SITE_TAGLINE will be used instead.
define('HOME_PAGE_TITLE', ''); // usually best left blank
Is it blank? Did you change the title / sitetag descriptions?
