Using % in coupons. (10%)

When I go to create a coupon it gives me the area to enter how much the coupon should be for. Does this mean if I enter $20 it will be worth $20 off the customer's purchase? If so, what will happen if I enter 10%? My main question here is, how do I create a coupon that takes off 10% or 20% of the customer's total.
