Cannot add Featured and Special products

I cannot add featured or special products from the admin. Please can someone help with this.

When I go to Catalog|Featured Products the selection box is greyed out the only available options are the date options.

I initially thought this was due to me setting the shop as showcase only but putting it back to normal store makes no difference.

I believe this has been broken for several weeks now and I have made extensive mods since because all my backups include the proble.

I'm using 1.38a and has the same issue. it works fine 2 weeks ago. The categories have hundreds of products, so there should be the same number of products in the specials insertion box.

BTW, it's the same in feature product insertion page.

I found the problem.
1. Go to Catalog|Product Types
2. Select the product type affected eg Product - General
3. Click Edit, Check the box for "This Product can be added to cart:"
4. Save

That should be it.
