categories & subcategories in center column?

OK. I think my brain has shorted out. I've been at this for a couple of weeks.

I really need some help making my categories more navagable.

What happens is that when I click in a category heading in the sidebar, it opens to show the subcategories, which is as it should be. But, in the center column, what pops up is a list of "new products for october." I believe that appears to the customer that this is all that's available in that list.

What I would like to have happen is for the subcategories to appear on the main page, perhaps in a grid, with a matching subcategory image.

Is this possible?

Did you add images to your categories?
Do that and then
admin > config > Layout Settings > Categories - Always Show on Main Page > set to 1
