Default disabled products still show up in "What's new"

Just today I listed about 6 more products to see how they would display and then disabled them until I had the descriptions I wanted to input. Some or all of them at different times show up in the "What's New for September" box. How do I fix that?

Also, one of the new products I listed showed up in the product display page as expected but when I went to disable it in the admin interface I couldn't find it in the product listing. I went directly to mySQL interface and located it there but I am still unable to find it from the admin interface, which leaves me no way to edit it from there. Can someone help me with these problems?

Sorry for the Double post, I didn't realize that was frowned upon, thank you for the tip.

Also, thank you for your help with my problem. I would appreciate if you could give me some insight to the second part of my post as far as not being able to edit the one particular product that doesn't show up in the Admin interface for editing products.

    Thank you in advance!

Normally one edits a product's information from the page where the categories are listed. If there are more products to show than the setting of max per page, then you may have to click the link to see the next page of entries.
