    Default changing databases?

apologies if this has been posted and answered, I've searched and can't find.

i'm installing a new zen cart because of a programmer who left some upgrades half installed and i can't figure out what he was doing... so i figured i should start fresh.

When i'm done, i would like to point the fresh install to my old database so that i don't loose any of the data, ie, just turn off the old store and start operating from the new storefront i just built.

Can this be done, and if so what files do i need to change to point it to the new database... is there anything else i need to change to make this work?

Your post is confusing.... on new & old
Do not point to old DB at all
Might list what upgrades were to be installed as many are file based only and do not touch the DB

i want the new zen cart installation to point to my old database.

there were many mods that were half installed custom templates, mods left not working, security patches weren't installed... and the guy that was doing it just left mid job. I'm not capable of fixing the mess, so i'm trying to start over, but don't want to loose my data/customer order history, etc.

So i thought maybe i could just point the new zen install to the old database. Maybe i should just import a backup of the old database into the database created with the new installation?

As asked what are the modules??

If there were any that added sql to the DB and were half a mess then using the old DB gives you half a mess still

there were several mods that were working prior to the work that was done. the work that was done was security patches, zen cart upgrade, custom template, wish list mod, birthday mod, image handler, reward points

at this point wish list is working, reward points is working except some admin functions, image handler is working.

custom template is almost there, birthday mod is not working, customers can no longer check out with a coupon or freecharger without selecting a payment type (paypal or money order) to which the person working on the site tried to code in a fix that really messed things up. I can no longer send out any emails from zen cart, newsletters, product notifications, etc. I had the email exporter mod installed previously and it previously worked and it no longer works. admin log in as customer was previously installed and no longer works (this was known and was supposed to be reinstalled by the person doing the work)

At this point, if I loose my order history, I guess I just do, I need to get these things in order. I would really hate to loose my customer info though, that would be a shame. I won't be installing all these mods, I only thought since I had "professional" doing it, it would be nice to have them.

You can grapple with this if you feel brave or just accomplished.

You know what payment types you have enabled and there are tables for these like PayPal & others
You can use phpmyadmin and export only the tables thta deal with customer data - don't forget the address table, all product related tables, all order related tables and follow the tutorial on what to enable

As you have installed a new cart follow the upgrade tutorial applying the DB created above and re-running zc_install upgrade DB Only

Thank you for the info, I will study up on this and see if I think it's something I can manage.
