help question Cryptic install instructions for local host

I have a new Debian, with Gnome, installed on a laptop with Apache2, PHP5 and MySQL running.

I unzipped the Zen Cart files and attempted to follow the severely truncated installation instructions for installing Zen Cart to the Local Host.

The only response I receive is "The requested URL http//localhost/zen-cart/zc_install/ was not found on this server."

The expanded Installation document only addresses the installation to an Internet Web Server.

I did not find any useful information in the FAQs or this Forum when I searched.

What are the actual steps required to install to a Linux localhost?

    Thanks

A linux "localhost" is conceptually the same as a live Internet webserver. Thus, provided you've set up your localhost server properly (which is a set of skills entirely separate from the Zen Cart software), the installation process is the same.

Sounds like your mistake is in entering "http//localhost..." instead of "http://localhost..." -- note your missing ":"

The missing ":" was a typo while trying to copy what was shown in the address bar.

If I only type in http://localhost/ I get the response "It works!" Which tells me the localhost is set-up correctly.

    Thanks

And what happens if you put "http://localhost/zen-cart" ? ( or whatever foldername *you* placed your Zen Cart files/folders in )

Thanks for the help. I installed Debian onto a desktop systemin case there was a problem with the Laptop.

The desktop gives me the same error. I guess I need to find out why Linux will not let me see anything past the "localhost" of the system.

If I only type in http://localhost/ I get the response "It works!"

As soon as I type in anything past that, I get the error message "The requested URL http//localhost/home/ was not found on this server."

It's supposed to be easy. But, it appears Linux has its own share of "unique" requirements, which the normal user should not have to deal with.

You have to put your web files in the proper folder or else it won't find them. Each webserver has its own setup ... you'll need to read your webserver documentation to find the document-root setting for it, and be sure you put your web files in that location.

Thank you DrByte. Your assistance got me to thinking about some other approaches.

With your info and some help from the linuxquestions.org forums I did a lot of trial and error testing.

It turns out that I kept thinking I had to use the full path to the installation files 'http://var/www/zen_cart/zc_install/index.php'. At least that is what I understood when reading the instructions and other guidelines.

Once ZenCart was unzipped to the /var/www/ directory all I had to do was type in http://hostname/zen_cart/zc_install and the browser opened the Install page.

No one said that I did not need to type in the whole directory path and file name. And, no one told me I had to use the computer name in place of the word 'localhost'. Since the tests for the initial PHP install always worked with 'http://localhost' I assumed that was the correct path to use.

Anyway, I am now on my way to insalling ZenCart.
