Error at checkout Linkpoint API

This I believe is an Issue at my host, but, once again I think I need to point them to the problem.

When a customer clicks to confirm their order (step3) the system, after a long pause, brings a page with the following error:

" 2006 MySQL server has gone away
in:
[select customers_email_format from zen_customers where customers_email_address= '[email protected]'] "

The email address in the error is the administrator of the website.

I found one article that deals with installing zencart:
Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server

Although my installation is not new. The server recently suffered a hdisk crash and needed to be restored from backup to a new drive.

Server OS: Linux 2.6.18-164.9.1.el5
PHP Version: 5.2.11 (Zend: 2.2.0)
Database: MySQL 5.0.85-community

Zen Cart 1.3.8a
