Show subcategories in side box

I'm using zen cart 1.3.8.
I want my side box to show sub categories unfolded.

I've been tried following mods and instructions but they haven't worked for me.

Any ideas how to show subcategories unfolded in category side box?

Sorry I don't have the answer but I'm interested in the solution. I've got this the other way round, I cannot get rid of my sub categories! The page takes about 5 mins to scroll down. If I find out how to stop it I will advise & you can do the revers.
