colomn widths

What id like to do is increase the width of the back ground of the left and right side colomns say to 170px and have it a lilac colour, then have the category/information boxes a white background , ive set the width of the side boxes in admin to 150px / 155px now i just need to work out how to increase the width of #navColumnOne and #navColumnTwo { so that they are wider than the boxes. I was unsure if it was the side coloumns i had to increase or the main centre colomn to decrease.

There are two settings in Admin - one to set the column with, and the other to set the sidebox width. Both are in Configuration - Layout Settings. The overall width is set in the stylesheet in #mainWrapper.
