Default How do I duplicate my Zencart installation?

    Zen Cart 1.3.8a
    Patch: 1::
    Database Patch Level: 1.3.8
    No addons.

    Good morning all.

I have a Zencart installation (www.thebrastrapman.co.uk) that has been up and running since Q3 2008.

Since then I have made a number of changes to the installation and the format (layout etc) is currently as I like it.

I now wish to set up another website with the same look and feel as my current one (purely to make it easy for me to maintain).

I am currently registering the new domain with my ISP (Hostpapa) and understand that this will be an add-on domain with all files being held under a new sub-directory under my current public_html directory.

What is the best method to set up my Zencart installation for this new website?

Just copy all files currently under public_html to the new sub-directory and make a few magic tweeks? What tweeks?

Do a new install of Zencart and then somehow overlay my changes from my current site?

I'm paranoid that I will screw up my current web site too - so no crazy suggests please!

Apologies if there are other threads covering this but I searched and didn't find anything (then again I never was that good with search options!)

    Many thanks in anticipation.

i would advise that you make a complete backup of the entire site as it is now first, there are two add ons for backing up the php version and the mysql database.

    backup my site PHP files

    backup MYSQL plugin

ensure that all of your links are relative too, that way the fact that it is in a sub directory wont matter as it will be relative to the install of zen cart.

then on your new server do a fresh install of zen cart set up the database etc (it will need to be a new database or it will be overwritten) once installed, using the mysql backup mod the new database as it is with no mods installed etc so that you can roll back any changes without having to reinstall all over again if something goes wrong on the new database and once that is done restore the backup from your old site to restore your database to the new database (do not use the install sql patch page to restore, instead continue to use the mysql backup mod) and then upload and activate your existing template. all should be as it was but on your new server.

make sure you back up your files as you go along and all should be fine.

when designing the server i test on is under public_html and i have had no problems whatsoever.

    Thanks for both your replies.

I have now duplicated my site to another directory under my original one and all in all its not going too badly.

However there are a number of standard links (eg in the header - shopping cart, my account, login, company logo and its link, home, store) that still point to my original site rather than the new one.

I've been using Zencart Developers Toolkit to track the problem down and have come across file /home/thebynio/public_html/thebirdboxman/includes/templates/bra-strap-man/common/tpl_header.php which seems to display a number of these links.

The code in this file seems to require a base reference for these links.

When I look at the source for my home page (which includes code from tpl_header.php) there is a '<base href' statement pointing to my new site directory but this is seemingly not being used as the links (as mentioned before) are pointing to my original site still.

If I explicitly add the new site directory to the front of the links in tpl_header.php then the links point to the right place when the home page is displayed- the implication being that the '<base href'
previously mentioned is being overridden somehow.

Or am I getting it all wrong?

    Any ideas.

    Thanks

A quick update for anyone who might be interested.

I couldn't figure out how the links were still pointing back to the original website so as suggested in my last post I explicitly added the new site directory to the front of the links in tpl_header.php and everything now works fine.

Problem(s) sorted (maybe not as they should be!) and duplication complete.

Continuing this 'duplication of site' thread I have just tried to backup the new installation to my PC and the FTP failed on a directory called 'wasadjp' - all the files within this directory (~30-40) have permissions of 000 - i.e. I can't read them. The directory itself has 444 permissions. I've done a search on wasadjp in the forum (i.e. here) but can't find any matches. Has anyone else seen this before? I certainly don't recall changing any permissions to 000.

    Thanks
