Default Re: Download Redirect 403 Forbidden Server Error

    Good morning Dr Byte,

On this topic "Download Redirect 403 Forbidden Server Error", today I tried to download from my webshop a document file called bjones2.zip, and after I got the 403 error message I went to my Doteasy apache server's error log and retrieved the following message (I've deleted my client number from it):

[Wed Oct 21 23:29:22 2009] [error] [client #] Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /home/virtual/site199/fst/var/www/html/shop/pub/.udsmrlerxwfoyelg/bjones2.zip

But the file bjones2.zip has been uploaded to the right place. I know this because the Zen Cart admin panel shows a green dot when it recognizes the file. Also because when redirect is turned off, the file downloads easily.
Also my pub folder is set to 777. And Doteasy's server is Linux.

    What are your thoughts?

    Caffy

Sounds like your hosting company doesn't allow you to serve files redirected using symlinks. Either the server's master configuration has it prohibited without allowing you to override with .htaccess, or your /pub/.htaccess file has been altered from the defaults and no longer specifically allows symlinks.
Contact the hosting company for specific assistance.

Maybe you can't use download-by-redirect with your hosting company's server configuration. Maybe download-by-streaming is necessary instead?

I took your advice Dr B., and contacted Doteasy. They replied,

"I have received reply from our operations team, and they have tested and confirmed that Zen Cart redirect digital download works in our new cPanel server. If you would like to use Download by redirect in Zen Cart, please consider migrating your account to the cPanel server.

"The hosting fee for the cPanel server is the same as your current hosting fee. There is only a US$12.95 one time server migration fee if you would like to switch the server.

"Please note that if you would like to migrate to the new server, you will need to download all of your website content and databases to your local computer and upload and republish them again on the new server. You will also be responsible to troubleshoot your website to ensure it works on the new server."

My thoughts? Hmm. At least we know now where the problem lies. But am horror-struck at the mere suggestion of having to re-install my shopping cart. I can *download* it no worries. I can *upload* it no worries. But something tells me there's going to be a lot more to it than that... <bites fingernails and breaks into a cold sweat, starts having nightmares...>

I wish they'd told me this before I installed my Zen Cart on their neolithic server.

*Is* there more to it than just uploading the whole thing to the new server?
I didn't realise this would snowball.
