Product Model Number Attributes

I have been thinking of a way to make different model numbers for attributes, I know it is not possible. My distributor gves me a list of 40,000+ products in a excel file with the QTY but the UPC for each product, so its difficult having many products and not being able to update the, constantly.

Would this be possible....
Example:
-Create a category names "attributes (this is where all the "attribute products will go, the different options for that product" THEN hide this category
-Make the main product
-Then use a cross sell or some sort of mod to list on the products listing with the different products found in the "attribute" category

So create the main Product:Glass Fish Tank
Then make seperate products and put them in the hidden attribute category: Glass Fish Tank 10 Gallon, Glass Fish Tank 20 Gallon etc
Then it would show on Glass Fish Tank product and have Glass Fish Tank 10 Gallon, Glass Fish Tank 20 Gallon on that products page as an option.

Would this be possible to do? OR is there another work around. Just a thought...

thanks kobra, but my problem is updating the qty of the attributes... by making them a single product seems to be the only way, and I want them to still appear as an attbute look so I owuld customize the cross sell alittle to fit that if it would work.
