Categories and sub categories confusion

I understand the concept of categories and sub categories and the business of not being able to create a sub category within a main category which already has products but we have been running a Zencart shop for about five years now quite happily which has a sub category with products, within a main category which also has products.

I can't remember how we achieved this unless we created a second category and then 'moved' it to the main category. It that was the case we would have got the warning about being able to do this temporarily etc but what are the problems associated with doing this?

We haven't seen any problems in the years we have been running our site and now we are in the process of developing a new one would quite like to do this again but not if it is likely to cause difficulties.

You can cheat and force this with a Move ... but when your searches, pricing, etc. do not work correctly ... that will be your problem ...
