    Default configure.php problems

I just downloaded the latest version of 1.3.8 and have it loaded on my site. After first loading it to my server, I could see the "dummy" store on my page. Then I started the process of setting permissions (which I could still see the "dummy" site) and changing the configure.php permissions. The moment I renamed the files, in both includes and admin/icludes, from dist-configure.php to configure.php I then could no longer see the dummy site, and got the "System Setup Required" page from Zen Cart.

Hello. Thank you for loading Zen Cart™.
You are seeing this page for one or more reasons:

    1. This is your first time using Zen Cart™ and you haven't yet completed the normal Installation procedure.
If this is the case for you, you will need to upload the "zc_install" folder using your FTP program, and then run zc_install/index.php via your browser (or reload this page to see a link to it).

    2. Your /includes/configure.php and/or /admin/includes/configure.php file contains invalid path information and/or invalid database-connection information.
If you recently edited your configure.php files for any reason, or maybe moved your site to a different folder or different server, then you'll need to review and update all your settings to the correct values for your server.
See the Online FAQ and Tutorials area on the Zen Cart™ website for assistance.

    To begin installation ...

    1. The Installation Documentation can be read by clicking here: Documentation
    2. You will need to upload the "zc_install" folder using your FTP program, and then run zc_install/index.php via your browser (or reload this page to see a link to it).
    3. The Online FAQ and Tutorials area on the Zen Cart™ website will also be of value if you run into difficulties.
Now I have gone through and double checked that I made the changes noted in the "Read Me" Installation guide. I even went back and uninstalled ZenCart, downloaded another copy, reloaded it, made the changes... and I'm still stuck.

What am I missing? I'm only on the 2nd step and can't get any further!

I'm not sure what you mean by the 'dummy store'. The usual installation method (mine, anyway) is to upload the files to your server, change the two dist-configure.php files to configure.php, change their permissions so they're writable, then point your browser to the root Zencart directory to begin the installation.

If you go to your store page the moment you upload it, you get the generic ZenCart "dummy store" before any modifications have been made.

And I did just as the instructions said, I uploaded the files to my server, renamed the 2 files, and changed permissions for the files listed in the install. I can't get any further though.

Okay just so I'm not missing nothing, here are some screen shots to show I'm going through the right steps.

    Changed Name & Permissions

    Changed Permissions

So what am I doing wrong that I keep getting this page?

No, actually you don't. Did you use Fantastico or some other control panel installer to install Zencart? If not, I'd delete all the files from your /store directory and upload everything manually again.

Glad to hear you're using this: I plan to keep it much more aggressively up-to-date than has been the case in the past, but don't hesitate to let me know if you find errors or need clarifications.

The first time I did use HostMonster's SimpleScript installer and got the same results as when I manually uploaded Zencart.

    And YES ...here's proof:

Though I can't do anything on the page because I don't have admin password or anything yet, because I haven't gotten far enough into the install to enter that info.

I hate to keep contradicting you, but what you see there is a properly installed Zencart installation. Nothing 'dummy' about it. I'd guess it's left over from the Simple Script installation. You should have received user and password info when that was done. I'm seeing that store in your /store directory.
