Customising signups

Im new to Zen Cart, Im finding it a great shopping cart so far. Im helping my friend setup there website for their petshop. I have a couple of questions if there is someone willing to share a little support for me.

1. When a customer signs up for the newsletters etc, I would like to add some questions about their pet, i.e, Pets name, how old, breed, male/female.
How can I go about adding this?

2. I would like to use the information I gathered from their signups to use in the emails, for instance, when Im writing a letter to them: Dear <<FIRSTNAME>>, We would like to welcome you and <<PETSNAME>> etc etc etc...

I would just like to be able to add the <<....>> in the letter, so it automatically adds the customers petname, breed, firstname etc in.

Can this be done?


One other thing, how do I get the checkout to work, I have added some products, instead of the add to cart etc showing, its showing the Contact us box instead. ANY THOUGHTS TO THIS?
