Show the total number of Products in the store?

I've been working on my store for about 2 weeks and (only ONE "scrap it and start over") I am just about to post for some reviews.
There is one more thing I would like to do, I would like to show the total number of Products in my store, possibly in the header or footer. Is there an example or mod for this, is this possible?

Apologies in advance if I missed the answer in my search of the forum.

Thanks haredo, that's got parts of what I want, I'll try and use that. I also noticed the Admin Home screen has what I want as well "Statistics Box" " Products: 89 ". I'll go mess with those... Thank you for the tip... Curtis
