Left and Right banner boxes

Hi!
I' am brand new to this and can't seem to make anything work.
First, I am trying to change the names in my left hand catagory and sub-catagory dropdown banner box. when i'm on my home page i've gone to "view" then "source" and can see the html there but have searched and searched and searched for it in my control panel but cannot seem to find the code text anywhere when i try to edit that area.
secondly, I'm also trying to create a seperate right hand banner box with its own title, links and/or pictuers. From the tutorials and faq area it says i can have up to eight banner boxes, and as of the moment only been able to create 1 using the all banners selection of banner groups. I've followed the directions on how to do this over and over and over to no avail! what comes up is anything I write appears in that existing box or nothing shows at all.
What am i doing wrong here? Someone please help, I've had a very frustrating time at this, and thank you in advance:

A link to your site would be helpful. Since you're new to this, you might be using terminology we don't recognize.

Are you really trying to create a banner box or do you want another side box?

Hi,
I'm trying to create another side box, add pictures and links to our myspace page, our twitter and friends. I've followed the directions to the letter. Nothing happens. I don't even know what value to assign its sort order, or if I'm even doing that correctly. MY site is @ http://wickedgirllingerie.net

It sounds like you want to replace the category name text in the "Categories" sidebox with other text. There is not an easy way to do this with standard text, but Categories Dressing will let you replace the text with an image of other text. What do you not like about the current category names, and what replacements do you want to make for some of them? You should be aware that making the categories sidebox names different from the actual names might lead to customer confusion.

Actually I finally figured out that by clicking on the green "e" in my admin> catalog> catagories/products only, I could edit the text in the catagory name box and type in my own. I know what you mean about the confusion, that's kinda why I wanted to change the wording. I only wanted to change a few items so I think that parts fine for now. Yay! only took me a week and twenty seconds!

Yes, editing the actual category names as you did covers all locations and is the best way to avoid confusion.

Im still tryin' to create a new sidebox/bannerbox?(i don't know which it's called I guess, lol..) with pictures and/or links? I'm not doin' sumpthin right.

"Bannerbox" is the name of a particular sidebox. That one is built to display an image or rotating set of images (which may be links), controlled in Tools > Banner Manager. The sidebox is activated and positioned using Tools > Layout Boxes Controller, and you can give it different styling if you want with rules in your stylesheet.
There are two different ones you can use at the same time, sideboxes/banner_box.php and sideboxes/banner_box2.php.

Thanks but I don't know what a stylesheet is or where to find it, and am having trouble creating the box. I kinda need a walkthrough here. super newbee...
