Format problem with Custom/index.php

I have searched and searched for an answer but can't find it. I have followed tutorial article 129 step by step several times. I don't change the code or remove any tags. I simply change the words Congratulations! You have successfully installed your Zen Cart... to Welcome! and saved it in includes/languages/english/mytemplate/index.php

I upload the page and apply the change. It changes the text to what I want but my store looses format. Suddenly the text is too big and the store is positioned to the left of the page. If I delete index.php from mytemplate folder, zencart defaults back to using the original index.php file, the format is back to normal and the zencart message is back.

I have checked and double checked this operation and can't figure out why this happens.

Zencart, newest version, hosted on GoDaddy.

Editing with Epression Web. It's supposed handle php and css and I don't see any changes taking place in the code.

I ust did a test. I copied and pasted the default index.php file into mytemplate and uploaded it. It worked find but with the original "Congratulations!..." text. As soon as I changed the text and saved and uploaded the page was back to loosing format.

Editing with Expression Web. (sorry for my bad spelling above)

I haven't used Expression Web, but some WYSIWYG editors add stuff to PHP files that can mess things up. Try editing the file with Notepad and see if that works.

Never used Expression Web, but unless you or it is FTP'ing the relevant file to your computer to edit, and then back to the server, any changes won't take permanent effect. You might try Notepad++ (free from Sourceforge) for editing - I know that works well.

I am going to try Notepad++ and see if that works. I will report back with the results.

As a note, yes, I am using ftp back and forth. I have everything backed up on my computer and I ftp the changes to the server, open my browser to see the results.

It Worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A note to anyone who might have this problem when using a WYSIWYG program, even if the program is says it handles php, try using Notepad++ to edit the files and save yourself days of tearing your hair out!!

You may ask---why am I using Microsoft Expression Web? Only because I have a client with a FrontPage enabled website.

I did the same thing and got the EXACT problem you described, using Expression Web. I'm new to Zen Cart (& PHP). Do you recall which files you had to replace to bring the home page back to its original formatting? I've got a copy of my entire zen cart site saved on my hard drive but would rather replace a few files than replace the whole thing if possible.

It's been awhile but this is what I did:

You need to look for the index.php file and restore it. I recommend using Notepad++ or one of the other programs mentioned on the forum to modify files. You will save hours of frustration!!

The problem with Expression Web is that it can make minor changes to the code when you save the page. That's not a problem if it's just plain HTML but not good with PHP.
