    Default is this practical

I need to do 2 things: update an old web site (mostly text and images (about 20 pages), and add a storefront. Is is practical to use Zen-cart to do both, or is it more practical to build them as separate entities and just link where needed?

Not only is it better to do it all in Zencart, it's pretty much the only way to do it properly. Linking to the Zencart shopping cart processes from another site doesn't work too well. If you want to duplicate the current look of the site, post a link and we can give you an idea as to how easy it will be.

curent site is http://www.mobitechsystems.com. Because of some changes in the hardware market, we're going to greatly expand our marketing of PDA and printers to use with our software; that's why I'm looking at Zen Cart. My inclination is to go with a 2-column design, with navigation on the left and text center and right.

I think the two-column design would be great - that's what I use mostly.

On the issue of 2 columns: it does appear that there is no quick & easy way to disable all the "features" that end up in boxes in the outer columns. From what I understand I need to edit the PHP files to disable these components. Is that accurate?

Admin > Configuration > Layout Settings > Column Right Status - Global.

Also Tools > Layout Boxes Controller for individual sidebox management.

No, you can turn "boxes" On or Off from within the admin panel, and have either a one column or two column layout.
