PayPal and downloadable products...????

I have read up on this but want to make sure I can do it. What I would like to do is to offer downloadable items (PDFs, Source Code, etc.) with payment made through PayPal. If the PayPal payment doesn't go through, does it make it not possible for the customer to do the download? I don't want to let the customer do the download while the payment is being processed on PayPal and an "unsuccessful" status is returned to the cart software. This will be on it's own server on a website. Thanks.

Whatever your payment method, if it is set up correctly, your downloads are safe until the payment is processed.
