    Just guessing, but earlier versions of IE often required a hack to force them to draw heights correctly. That's perhaps why you had that line in your stylesheet, but it wasn't quite right. Try...

    #navMainWrapper: height:1%;

    ... or try putting that specifically into the header and footer parts of the stylesheet.

    Thanks guys for your help!! Much appreciated I have resolved the issue with those tips as far as I am aware. I do not have other versions of IE to test further but on my system in all browsers i do have it seems to show relatively the same.

    You can learn more than you ever wanted to about this sort of problem by Googling "Holly hack, box model hack". One link you'll find is to a CSS Hack Cheat Sheet in PDF form. Very handy.
