Your site is very slow to connect. It could also stand some optimization - the page is over 400k ... 100k is ideal.

What parse time should I aim for? Any suggestions on how to optimize my store?

I tried netfirms shared hosting and found it to be painfully slow. Definitely unsuitable for any advanced ecommerce application like Zen Cart.

So if I need a new host, how do I know which are the best? I realize there are hosts suggested on this site for zen-cart but if I'm in another situation where I am sharing my server won't it be the same? Dedicated servers seem rather pricey for a small site like mine. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Not all shared servers are created equally. The servers themselves are different specifications, the networking within the hosting environment are different and certainly the number of customers on one server is different.

While we can't post specific recommendations here on the forum, a quick search will at least bring up hosts that are NOT recommended :)
