Redesigning Category Tree

Let's say you have the category "Helmets" with 100 different helmets in it.

Now you want to add subcategories to Helmets for the different materials. You cannot add subcategories because you already have products inside the Helmets category.

Is the following the right approach to create a new category:

Create a new category. Move all the products from Helmets there. Then, create the subcategories inside Helmets, and move the products into the subcategories?
