No, I've set up my cart as explained in the post you are refering to.
Customers CAN order even though products are out of stock.

But thank you very much for finding my post. I have done quite some work on my template since I wrote that post. And also installed Fast and Easy checkout - which made my checkout-message go away for products out of stock.

And as embarrassing as it is: I had fogotten all about it.

(Not only didn't I find this when I searched for it, but it was also there under my own posts)

Note to self: Get more structure!
